Hilbert and Evelien de Vries married in 2011 and have three beautiful daughters: Sarah, Emma and Deborah. After they married, they lived in Tanzania for a few months. Hilbert did his last medical internship there and Evelien was able to work for a Dutch development organization. This experience stirred in them the desire to continue to work in the future for people who have far fewer facilities than people in the Netherlands. When Klaus-Dieter John, the director of Hospital Diospi Suyana, asked them to come to Peru in August 2022, it was clear to us that this would be their path in life for the coming years.
On January 6 2024 the family moved to Peru. First they stayed in Arequipa, where they took a 5 month Spanish language course. In the end of June they moved to Curahuasi, where the hospital is located.
In the hospital, Hilbert works as a general surgeon and as a GE (abdominal oncology) surgeon. There is another general surgeon working at the hospital who desperately needs support. He is grateful they can do the work together.
Evelien works at the school: Colegio Diospi Suyana. She supports the administration department and keeps track of the digital student system.
The children are going to the local mission school Colegio Diospi Suyana for their education. This is a Spanish-speaking school. Evelien also teaches other subjects at home including Dutch and maths.
